Leadership selection criteria

How we choose committee leads and the Webmaster: the scoring, the interview, and priority to the lower academic year when experience is comparable.

Leadership selection criteria

How we assess applications to lead a committee (Technical, Programming, Media & Events, Research, Convo Club) and for the Webmaster seat on the Executive Board, so that every candidate is judged by the same standard and knows what the decision is based on.

1Principles

  • Every application is scored with the same criteria and weights, and read by at least two members of the Executive Board.
  • Experience counts most, followed by the quality of the proposed plan, then motivation and commitment.
  • When experience is comparable, the candidate in the lower academic year comes first (section 4).
  • No specific major or IEEE membership is required, and personal relationships play no part.

2Scoring the application (out of 100)

WeightCriterionWhat we look at
35ExperiencePrevious leadership positions and the size of the teams led; projects, competitions and events, the candidate’s actual role in them, and the results.
25Proposed planClear, measurable objectives for the year; the first-30-days plan; how the team will be built and kept; working with the other committees.
15Motivation and fitWhy this role in particular, and what the candidate brings that the chapter lacks today.
10Skills and toolsHow well the skills match the committee’s work. For Webmaster: web development and the sites or tools built.
10CommitmentWeekly availability and other commitments during the year.
5CompletenessClear, detailed answers; a portfolio link or CV (optional).

3The interview

The highest-scoring candidates are invited to a short interview (about 15 minutes) with two Board members. The final score is 60% application, 40% interview. The interview looks at clear thinking, the ability to explain the plan, and how the candidate handles a practical scenario.

4Priority to the lower academic year

Rule: when two candidates have comparable experience, the one in the lower academic year is preferred. Experience is comparable when the experience scores differ by 5 points or less.

Why: a student in an earlier year stays with the chapter longer, builds on what they learn, hands the role over properly, and is a natural candidate for senior roles in the years after. Reaching the same experience in less time also shows more initiative.

Example:
CandidateYearExperience (of 35)Outcome
ASecond28A is preferred: one point apart, lower year
BThird29
If B scored 34 and A 28 (six points apart), B would be preferred: the difference in experience is clear.

Tie-break order

  1. Experience score (when the gap is more than 5 points).
  2. Lower academic year.
  3. Proposed plan score.
  4. Weekly availability.

Final-year and postgraduate students are welcome in every role; the rule only applies when experience is comparable.

5The process

  1. Apply on the website; a confirmation arrives immediately.
  2. The application is scored with these criteria within 7 to 14 days.
  3. The highest-scoring candidates are invited to an interview.
  4. The decision arrives by email, with the team hub sign-in details when accepted.
  5. Candidates who are not selected are offered membership if they agreed to it in their application.

6Fairness and privacy

  • A Board member does not score an application from a relative or close friend; it goes to another reviewer.
  • CVs and application data are seen only by the Executive Board and used only for selection.
  • Any candidate may ask for brief feedback on their application after the decision.

Approved by the Executive Board for the 2026/2027 cycle.
